In this eighth edition of my editorial illustration collections, I’m excited to share a selection of editorial projects that have allowed me to experiment with different techniques and storytelling approaches. These works reflect my ongoing journey as a visual designer, blending art and information to bring powerful narratives to life.
Each project offered a unique opportunity to explore new methods of visual expression and storytelling. From intricate typographic portraits to detailed photomosaic illustrations, every piece was a chance to dive deep into the subject matter and connect with the story in a meaningful way.
The process of transforming complex ideas into visual compositions has always been a source of great joy and fulfillment for me. I strive to create designs that not only inform but also captivate and engage the viewer, offering them something both thought-provoking and visually compelling. This collection is a testament to that ongoing passion for finding new ways to communicate visually. It represents my continued exploration of the relationship between design, information, and emotion, one illustration at a time.
Science magazine: Predicting Pathogenicity
For the September 2023 cover of Science magazine, I was commissioned to create an editorial illustration visualizing the role of deep learning in predicting the pathogenicity of human missense variants. The image showcases a human figure, made out of heat maps from the relative research of the scientists, authors of the article. This dynamic artwork captures the intersection of biotechnology and artificial intelligence, illustrating the process of forecasting genetic impacts in a visually striking way.
The same illustration is bought from Google DeepMind for their communication needs.
diaNEOsis: A Collage of Insight and Discovery
For the cover of diaNEOsis's "Έρευνες (Researches) 2021", I created a digital collage illustration featuring my niece, Marialena, looking through a telescope made of fragmented data and reports. This visual concept symbolizes the think-tank’s dedication to providing clear, accessible, and data-driven policy proposals. The scattered pieces, representing reports, statistics, and data visualizations, come together to depict a broader vision of the future of research and development.
Ja Morant: Shattering Limits
This dynamic photomosaic digital illustration celebrates Ja Morant’s monumental achievement of breaking the glass ceiling in his NBA career. Crafted from photos capturing moments of his time with the Memphis Grizzlies, this artwork was commissioned by Bleacher Report in recognition of his first All-Star appearance.
A video version of the mosaic was also created, allowing viewers to explore the image, guiding them across the intricate surface, further enhancing the significance of this achievement.
1,000 Milestones: A Photomosaic Tribute to USGA History
For the Golf Journal Summer 2024 issue, the official publication of the USGA, I was commissioned to create a photomosaic illustration celebrating the 1,000th USGA championship. The cover features the number "1,000" constructed from hundreds of images of past champions, with a magnifying glass focusing on a closer look at some of the notable moments from the championships. The accompanying spread further explores this milestone, using a collage of images from various championships to form the large number "1,000," symbolizing the rich history of the sport and the legacy of the U.S. Open. The work embodies the evolution of the sport through visual storytelling.
Litigation Journal: Experience Black
The Litigation Journal, published quarterly by the American Bar Association, is a leading publication in the field of trial practice, providing practical yet engaging insights into the challenges and interests of trial lawyers and judges alike. For the Summer 2022 issue (Volume 48, #4), titled Experience Black, the focus was on cases and legal matters affecting the African American community. For this issue, I created a mosaic portrait of an African American lawyer, composed of imagery that reflects themes of social justice, minority rights, and historic elements from pivotal social justice movements.
Caltech Magazine: Chemical Codebreakers and Signatures from the Past
Working with university presses is an incredibly enriching and educational experience. The California Institute of Technology, a returning client, consistently challenges me with fascinating projects. This time, I had the opportunity to develop a series of digital mosaic illustrations for Caltech Magazine, showcasing the pivotal role of isotopes in uncovering the mysteries of Earth's ancient past. The artwork blends scientific themes with creativity, transforming extinct animals like the ground sloth, a dinosaur, and ancient species of penguins into vibrant mosaics made up of countless atoms and molecules, symbolizing the precision of isotope research.
George Zarkadakis: A Mosaicked Memory of the Past
George Zarkadakis, a childhood friend of mine for nearly 50 years, has always been someone I deeply admire. With a PhD in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, earned in the late 80s when AI was still in its infancy, George has been a visionary in both his professional and creative life. As a talented author, particularly known for works inspired by cyber culture, I’ve read almost all of his books. For his latest historical novel, a coming-of-age story set in the Indo-Greek kingdom during the meta-Hellenistic period, I had the privilege of crafting the portrait of a young boy—an image inspired by George’s own youth. The illustration, created as a mosaic, captures a blend of history and personal nostalgia, subtly echoing George as he appeared many years ago when we first met at a summer resort near Athens.
CACM: Faces of Innovation in Academic Program Development
A photomosaic artwork commissioned by the Association for Computing Machinery, another beloved returning customer for the cover of Communications of the ACM. The image features a graduate cap composed of diverse faces from academia, symbolizing a transformative concept in education.
Mary Higgins: A Typographic Tribute to a Legacy at Emerson College
For Expression magazine, the alumni publication of Emerson College, I was commissioned to create a typographic portrait celebrating Mary Higgins’ remarkable 22-year career in the College’s Office of Government and Community Relations, before her retirement in September. This portrait is crafted entirely from serif characters from the PF Din Serif typeface, designed by Panos Vassiliou, one of my all-time favorite fonts. The illustration reflects the depth and significance of Mary Higgins' legacy at Emerson, using typography to tell a visual story of her career and contributions to the College.
A Typographic Portrait of Wolfgang Kuebler for the Physiologist magazine.
For the September 2023 cover of The Physiologist magazine, the journal of the American Physiological Society, I was commissioned to create an editorial illustration of Wolfgang Kuebler. As the magazine explores his role in leading the American Physiological Society (APS) through the complexities of scholarly publishing, I designed a portrait entirely from fragments of academic papers. The collage-style portrait is made up of research articles and scholarly text, visually emphasizing the challenges and intricacies of scientific publishing and Kuebler's leadership in this evolving field. The typographic elements come together to form a portrait of Kuebler, reflecting the nature of his work while celebrating the intersection of research, science, and publication.
Many many thanks to the editors, the authors and most of all the designer colleagues offering me the opportunity to work for such amazing subjects.
